I am driving home after a very long day. It was a horrible work day, and then I sat through a 4 hour grad school class when all I wanted to do was come home and eat ice cream and hug my dog and process my day. But, I love grad school and I love my job, and some days are just not ideal.

My doctor called me today. A blood specialist with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, even though I don’t have cancer, but a blood issue. She told me I need to take it more seriously, the fact that I almost died recently in December 2020, and also a couple years earlier in May 2018.

Both times, I had a headache that I felt was a bit more than a headache. Both times in the hospital, the MRI showed I had a massive blood clot in my brain, and I was promptly admitted.

The first blood clot dissolved after almost a year…


Every year in our office, we celebrate Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah), the Danish concept of being with our loved ones, being warm, being cozy. It is a practice that extends all year long, but is especially celebrated during the colder months of the year. Our office would have a lunchtime party, a potluck where everyone would bring soup, bread, chili, muffins. We had hot chocolate and hot cider, warm quinoa, homemade cookies. We always had such an array of foods, various dishes that were considered “comfort foods” and meals that people would make whenever they wanted to warm up. …
